I just finished Green Grass, Running Water by Thomas King. I have to say, it was a great read. The book itself takes you along the stories of several individuals; some real, some make believe, some you just don’t know, and some that are created right on the spot by that “I” or that crazy mischievous coyote.
It was a very different, very magical book. The writing style was fantastic, the characters were great, and the messages were profound. The different parts that made up the overall story could have made for good books possibly on thier own, but they way they twist and rely on eachother made them all more interesting. Some parts seemed to belong in a soap opera, some in a children’s book, some in a philosophy classroom, and some in the Bible.
This book was different from the Indian lit. I have read in the past by Sherman Alexie because it was set almost entirely within Canadian borders. It was interesting the friendly Canadians treated the real Americans about the same way we did (do) here in the states.
This book is no doubt in my top 10, maybe top 5. I would recommend it to anyone, with like 3 days on their hands. It is difficult to put down.
